A note on how nitride hardness is quoted

A nitrided case is quoted in Vickers (HV), not Rockwell C. The case is only a few hundredths of a millimetre deep, so a Rockwell C indenter pushes through it into the softer core and reads low — any nitrided pin sold with a single "60 HRC surface" figure is quoting a conversion, not a measurement.

Core hardness is a genuine HRC figure and is the one that matters for whether the pin bends or snaps under side load. We confirm the measured case and core values for your batch in writing before shipping, and a hardness report can be supplied with the order. If your incoming inspection tests to a specific standard, tell us which and we will make sure the certificate matches it.

Which pin do you actually need?

We stock three ejector pin types, and they fail differently:

  • Nitrided SKD61 (this page). Hard case, tough core. The general-purpose choice, and the right one for long thin pins or any tool with side load or slight misalignment — the soft core lets the pin bend rather than snap.
  • Through-hardened. Hard all the way through — 48–52 HRC in SKD61, higher in high-speed steel grades. Better wear life on abrasive and glass-filled resins, and it stays hard where you cut or regrind it. Less forgiving of shock.
  • Stepped (shouldered). A thin tip on a larger shank, for ejecting off small features without running a fragile pin the full length of the plate.
  • Blade (flat). For thin ribs and narrow bosses a round pin cannot reach. Needs an anti-rotation feature in the plate.

The short rule: pins wearing out → through-hardened. Pins breaking → nitrided. Pins buckling → stepped, or a larger diameter.

Cutting to length

Order the next length up. Ejector pins are cut to length at the working (tip) end and then finished flush with the cavity surface. The head is never cut — it locates the pin in the ejector retainer plate.

The cut face is core material (35–42 HRC), not nitrided case. For a flat tip face in most tools that is fine. If the tip face is contoured to the part, or runs against abrasive or glass-filled resin, choose a through-hardened pin, which stays hard where you cut it.

Choosing a size

Start with the working diameter and overall length, then verify head diameter, head thickness, tip condition and any fit-critical tolerances before ordering. If you are replacing a pin in an existing tool and the old one was already cut, measure the plate stack rather than the old pin.

Need something else?

Diameters up to Ø20, lengths to 500 mm, special hardness or case depth, and non-standard heads are all available. Request a quote with your size and quantity and we will respond within one business day.

Documentation

Material certificates and hardness reports can be provided with your order. Tell us what your quality system requires and we will confirm the scope — and any cost — in your quotation.
