Precision angle pins (cam pins) for injection-mold slide actuation, sold in packs of 2 — slides come in pairs more often than not. Sizes are given as diameter × length in millimetres.

What the angle pin controls

The angle pin drives the slide open as the mold opens and pulls it closed as the mold shuts. Everything about slide timing comes from three numbers: pin diameter, pin angle, and the clearance in the slide hole. Get any of them wrong and the symptom shows up somewhere else — a slide that binds, a pin that bends, or a core that fouls the cavity on close.

The pin is deliberately not the strongest part of the mechanism. It is meant to take the side load and hand the holding job over to the locking heel once the slide is home. If your angle pins are bending, the heel is not taking the load — check the heel contact before you order thicker pins.

That is the standard specification for this part type. We confirm the material certificate and the measured hardness for your batch in writing before shipping — tell us if your incoming inspection tests to a particular standard and we will make the certificate match it.

The two diameters are not the same fit

This is the detail people get caught by. The retention section is m5 — an interference fit, pressed into the fixed half so the pin cannot move. The working section is f6 — a clearance fit, because the slide has to travel along it freely. They are the same nominal diameter and different tolerance bands.

If you ream both holes to the same size, you get either a pin that will not press home or a slide that rattles. Size the fixed-half hole to the m5 band and the slide hole to f6 with the running clearance your angle needs on top.

Angle and stroke

These pins are supplied straight. The angle comes from how the hole is bored, not from the pin, so the same pin serves any angle in the normal 10°–25° range. Two things to hold in mind when you pick a length:

  • Usable stroke is roughly the engaged pin length multiplied by the tangent of the angle. A steeper angle gives more stroke per millimetre of mold opening but multiplies the side load on the pin and the heel.
  • The pin must stay engaged in the slide until the slide has cleared the undercut completely. Coming out early is the classic cause of a slide that fails to return, because nothing is left to pull it back.

Above about 25° most tool builders move to a hydraulic or cam-driven slide rather than pushing the pin harder.

The spherical tip is not decoration

SR = D/2 means the tip is a full hemisphere. It exists so the pin enters the slide hole without catching if the slide has drifted a fraction out of position — which it will, on a worn tool or a cold start. A flat or chamfered tip catches the hole edge instead, and each catch peens the edge a little more.

Fitting notes

Check the pin runs square to the parting line in both planes before pressing home; an angle pin fitted a degree out of plane loads one side of the slide hole and wears an oval. When replacing, measure the old pin's engaged length rather than its overall length if it has been shortened at the head.

Larger sizes and headless pins

Ø30 and lengths to 300 mm are stocked, along with headless angle pins with a threaded end, but a pair in those sizes exceeds what a flat parcel rate can carry sensibly. Request a quote for those and we will price the freight against your destination.
