precision-spherical-head-angle-pin
Spherical-Head Angle Pin

Spherical-head and threaded angle pins, made to your geometry. The angle pin is what converts mold-open travel into slide travel — one hardened pin doing the work of a cam. Send a drawing, a sketch with the angle and lengths, or the old pin photographed against a caliper, and we quote in writing, normally within one business day.

The angle is the design decision

The working angle sets how far the slide moves per millimetre of mold opening, and how much force goes sideways into the pin instead of into the slide.

Typical range is 15° to 25°. Below about 15° the slide barely moves and the mold has to open a long way to clear it. Above about 25° the side load on the pin climbs steeply and you start bending pins and wearing bores oval.

The heel block angle should be 2–3° steeper than the pin. The pin does the moving; the heel block does the holding. If they are the same angle the pin ends up carrying injection pressure, which it is not there for.

Engagement length matters as much as angle. The pin has to stay in the bore through the whole slide stroke plus a margin. Tell us the required stroke and we will check it rather than assume.

Hardness: the pin should not be the softer part, and should not be the same

The pin runs in a bore in the slide or in a fixing block. If the two are similarly hardened they gall, and a galled angle pin bore goes oval quickly. Normal practice is a through-hardened pin — typically around 55–58 HRC in a suitable tool steel — running in a bore that is either clearly softer and easily re-bushed, or bushed with a replaceable sleeve. Decide which part you want to replace, and that answer sets the hardness pair.

What the spherical head does

A spherical or ball head lets the pin enter its bore with a little angular misalignment without binding, which matters on a slide whose gib clearance has opened up over time. It is a tolerance for the real world, not a precision feature — it does not remove the need to get the angle and engagement right.

What to send us

Shaft diameter and effective (engaged) length

Head diameter, head radius and how the pin is retained

Thread size, pitch and thread length, for threaded types

Working angle, and the slide stroke it has to deliver

What the pin runs in — bore material and hardness, or bushed

Material, heat treatment and hardness, or describe the duty and we will propose one

Tolerance on the shaft diameter and on the angle; quantity and destination

Replacing a pin that failed?
