Quantity, because the price per piece at five is a different price per piece at two hundred. Material, or at least what the part has to survive. Hardness with a range and a measurement location, since surface and core are different numbers. Which dimensions are functional, because tightening everything to the same tolerance is the most expensive way to draw a part. And the destination, since freight and duty on steel components are a real part of your landed cost, not a rounding error.

Working from a sample instead of a drawing

Very common with replacement parts. A measured sketch with the fitting dimensions marked, plus photographs with a rule in frame, is normally enough to start. Say which surfaces were worn — a part measured as it came out of the mould is already undersize where it matters, and copying it faithfully reproduces the wear.

What we will tell you before you commit

Whether the part can be made as drawn, what we would change and why, the price, and the lead time. It rises with the ejector stroke, and because it is inclined, it moves sideways as it rises. The sideways movement is what clears the undercut, and it is fixed by simple trigonometry:

Sideways travel = ejector stroke × tan(lifter angle).

So the angle is not a style choice — it is set by the undercut depth you have to clear and the ejector stroke you have available. Practical range is usually 5° to 15°. Steeper clears more per millimetre of stroke, but the side load on the lifter rod and on this slide unit climbs with it, and steep lifters bend rods.

Tell us the undercut depth and the available ejector stroke and we can check the angle rather than simply machining the one on the drawing — a surprising number of lifter problems are an angle that never had enough stroke behind it.

Why the slide unit exists at all

Without a guided base, the lifter rod's sideways reaction is carried by the ejector plate hole, which wears oval and then lets the lifter cock over. The slide unit gives that reaction a proper bearing surface and keeps the rod's foot travelling in a straight line. Its bearing area and its fit in the ejector plate pocket are therefore what determine service life — not the rod.

Lubrication and hardness pairing

The slide interface runs dry unless you design for it. A V-groove or flat sliding face with no grease retention wipes clean in a few hundred cycles. The first (12) is the nominal tensile strength in hundreds of MPa — 1200 MPa. The second (9) is the ratio of yield to tensile, 0.9, so yield is about 1080 MPa. That is roughly twice the strength of a common 8.8 screw of the same size, which is why mold plates can be held by screws that fit in a modest counterbore.

The trade-off is worth knowing: higher strength classes are less ductile and more notch-sensitive. A 12.9 screw tolerates less abuse than an 8.8 — a damaged thread, a burr under the head, or a socket rounded out by the wrong key are all more likely to end in a broken screw rather than a stripped one.
